Iíve been wanting to do some kind of piece of the Hover Tank from 2nd Robotech war (amine was named Southern Cross in Japan). Even the though that series isn't even close to being the fan favorite I was always a fan of the Hover Tank mech (although the "tank mode" was the walker and the hover mode was just the "transport mode" :p). I want to do some fan art but the original design is severely lacking in detail, especially in how the arm joints work. I knew I was going to have to gussy up the design before I could proceed with an illustration. I had fun with it XD

I just got the big 17 disc Robotech box set a while ago... workin' my way through it is fun! I used to build hovertanks with lego when I was a young 'un.

A tank with a Gerwalk mode? I think yes.

I love all the little close up details.

I still have the old RPG books for the Robotech series. The hover tank was so stacked! Armor, weaponry, and mobility stats were off the charts. So broken! Truly a thing of beauty  I think they tried in vain to balance it by limiting the main cannon use to only the gerwalk mode, seeing as how the main cannon was as powerful as most of the cannons on the starships.

Wooohhh... His head is heaps cool.

I don't really know much about Robotech, but funnily enough I drew a Robotech picture when I was in High School.. I was just copying a picture from a video game magazine mind you.

The top central image makes me think of Mech Warrior.

Basically Robotech was how Americans got introduced to the anime Macross in the 80's. At the time American tv required a cartoon series be at least 70+ episodes long (weird I know) and Macross was only 26 episodes, so they got the rights to two series The Southern Cross and Mospida and dubbed it so that it was all one continuous story and called the whole thing Robotech.

Basically Robotech was divided into three wars;the first being the Macross war;next The Southen Cross; and ending with Mospida. The latter two series were kind of rip off series of Macross as they were trying to capitalize on the three mode transformation mechs of Macross, so when they redubbed the whole story and put them all in the same univers. American audiences with no prior knowledge of any of these series (couldn't look it up on the internet back then LOL) just accepted it as it seemed plausible.

The hover tank is from the Southern Cross, which was the 2nd and least popular Robotech war. LOL

Still I'm glad you like redesign XD

The time of No Internet *_*

Mmm.. I never saw Robotech on Australian TV, The first big thing to be aired over here was Neon Genesis Evangelion.. Before that there was only Dragon Ball Z.

The funny thing about anime is that I got into it and only saw English version Anime, these days I absolutely cannot stand listening to English version Anime, it comes across as corny and childish, Something about watching Anime in Original Japanese that makes it better.

And yesh.. It is a good design.

I'm trying to imagine a audience in 84' being first introduced to anime by watching Neon Genesis...XD

Yeah anime is way better with the original Japanese voice actors for sure
